RME's built-in amp/Magni 3/SPL Phonitor XE -> Elear. Every week I debate on whether selling my Audeze LCD 2.2 fazor and getting this. So who is Elear for? I always notice how certain instruments sound best on certain headphones that I’ve reviewed in the past: the HD800 being especially great at strings and orchestral recordings, the Hifiman HE-500 being especially good at vocals and the Omni standing out for how it showcases acoustic guitars. Not only is the upper mid problem taken care of but it does it while feeling more clear, smoother, and more refined. Found the micro fiber Elex pads to be way more comfortable. Shortly before attending the London Can Jam in August, the hype regarding the new Focal Utopia ($4000) and Elear ($1000) had reached a fever pitch – so much so that I put it high on my list of items to try out. I have heard some people still find Elear to be harsh in treble, and this might be more noticeable because of the sharp rise in energy from low to mid treble. All joking aside, the weight distribution on this headphone is such that allows for this. Elear are audiophile open-backed headphones manufactured in France by Focal. Now I have tried using EQ on Elear and I can definitely use it to help bring the upper mids more forward. This is because, once again, the Elear loves to take every instrument in a song and throw it at the listener – reemphasized. It isn’t terrible and I can adjust to it and sort of shift the headphone position around to find a better fit, but it takes a bit fiddling around every once in a while across longer listening sessions. In fact, I think HE-500 is a pretty good example of a planar version of Elear+Elex pads (or just Elex). That being said, the connectors on each side of the headphones are 3.5mm and, thus, so easily swappable - no proprietary connectors here folks. I actually posted about that experience here a while ago. I would classify those headphones as having a more linear presentation to them. HD650’s bass is not well extended and the slower decay makes it feel much more wooly in comparison. My pair shipped out today, so hyped. This could possibly partially explain the better imaging/soundstage of that headphone compared to Elex. If you are treble sensitive at all Elear might be one you need to audition first to be safe. However, it is further up the graph that the treble returns with a vengeance – making the Elear the headphones with the most snap I have owned yet, that isn’t V-shaped. Focal Elear Review So I know Focal Elear isn't exactly new or exciting these days and this is a "late" review. I’ve fought the HE-500 and two Omnis and survived to find the Elear a comfortable wearing experience. But on a positive note it is what lead me to audeze for my endgame headphones. However, upper mids/low treble is where things start to fall apart. Focal Elex: Basically Elex just fixes all my complaints with Elear. Though I don't agree 100% with everything you've said here, thanks for the really good review, I've been loving the Elear. Exactly what i want to read from what humans should care about. focal elear review reddit

I think Elear+Elex pads puts it in a similar level as HE-500. Good to see you back. I use a mix of FLAC and Spotify premium streaming for testing. These things can be remedied with source gear to an extent. It is just this oddball headphone that didn't make sense. I saw a post on the front page of r/headphones today of someone who bought an inexpensive aftermarket cable. Elear is better for a more lively and fun sound. After nearly two months, I am ready to publish my findings. This also really makes timbre feel off if you listen to a lot of natural instruments like violins, pianos, acoustic guitar, etc. This goes for Elear+Elex pads too. Of course, this is nowhere near the capability of the HD800 – but the trade-off of that is that the Sennheiser headphones can get quite painful and strident at times. i don’t mind more impact ofc. I don’t find the bass wanting with most genres of music I throw at it, including electronic and dance-pop music. Its tonal balance isn’t even enough to be neutral and reference level. Video Review Introduction: God, this hype. And they don’t just look expensive, they feel it too. Th-X00 has more bloom. On the other hand, the Aeon Flow (it is more fun than the Ether tho) is one of the most unexciting headphones I've heard, though it is extremely accurate. The Elear emits a premium aura from it in its black, grey and silver colour scheme. It has much more sub-bass and mid-bass than Elear. Anyways, hope this doesnt come off as as a nitpicky question goblin, i am happy to hear any comments and seek knowledge i can bring into my headphone understanding (combining subjective and objective data over time) more than buyer debate if that makes sense. Note that HE-500 is a rather hard to drive planar headphone that really needs a lot of power (particularly current). Treble brightness is about even with Elear, but HE-500 feels more cohesive in its sound. It's sturdy and without microphonics, just over-the-top. Get an HD6XX and call it a day. Frankly, we wouldn’t have been surprised to see a price tag twice the size on these over-ears. A used HE-500 holds more risk in getting repairs and such due to it being long discontinued, but at the prices they are available it could be a good alternative to Elear. Loudspeaker: 137⁄64“ (40mm) Aluminum-Magnesium "M" shape dome, Connectors: 1 x 01/4“ (6.35mm) stereo Jack connector 2 x 09⁄64“ (3.5mm) Jack, Carrying case: 1253⁄64“x1015⁄64“x629⁄64“ (326x260x164mm), I remember thinking at the London Can Jam that the Elear looked better aesthetically than the Utopia, preferring the former’s demure nature over the latter’s bombastic grill opening in the cups and spotted earpads. I find that more pop/electronic genres can sound good if bass and mid treble are particularly emphasized. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but as I said earlier – I found the Elear to look more distinguished than the Utopia even. I have read tons of comments you have given on so many forums as i have read probably a hundred pages on the elear, elex, and clear. John Mayer Trio, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Tom Misch, Gary Clark Jr, Devon Gilfillian). Seems a pretty unnecessary thing to add to me. This headphone weighs 450g and that is without the simultaneously incredible yet ridiculous cable that is provided in the box. However, you mentioned fatigue, and if fatigue is an issue than there are plenty of other cans out there that aren't as forward in treble. Also, it is worth noting that the stock cable is particularly terrible and is like a heavy vacuum cord. Overall, I really like the look and build of all the Focal headphones and think they look quite distinct. Does eq make the elex more or less indistinguishable to the clear? I've only had my Elear for less than 2 weeks, but I completely agree that lower volume listening is where they really do shine. Cymbals sound accurate without demanding listener attention by drowning anything else out. The treble of the Elear is never sibilant, to my ears, and I am quite grateful for that. I think that few hundred is much better spent getting a secondary can if you don't have one already. i am getting Utopia in two weeks, but this review made me decide to also buy the Elear!! So I have heard Clear a number of times at meets and at stores. But when going to higher volumes the mid suckout becomes much more apparent and at those levels the bass starts to overwhelm the mids and starts to feel overly warm and bloated. I consider myself a passionate value added hobbyist, but not a purist (example: i love leica cameras and premium lenses and use them like i stole em, but wont buy their $7,000 lenses). I made the decision that day to pursue the Elear, as the Utopia was far out of my reach, and to dissect its sound reproduction for myself. A place for discussion, news, reviews and DIY projects related to portable audio … It just isn't wall of fame worthy and I never understood its inclusion. As mentioned before, the batche reproduction of sound makes it so one single instrument or melody does not take centre-stage nearly as much. I still don’t think Elear gets anywhere near Beyerdynamic levels of treble though. Glad you enjoyed the review. Sennheiser HD800: These headphones are incredibly different. Elear is better if you favor a more open sound. A quick browse through Focal’s website shows that they want to position themselves as a luxury brand, and stylish above all. With Elex pads, Elear evens out in tonal balance which puts it closer to HD650, but it still has much more treble energy for better or worse. Keep in mind that the Omni held this position before Focal released this beast of a headphone. My only complaint with the build is that the headband can creak just a bit when twisting each side, though this isn’t noticeable when actually wearing them. I would love to hear your comments after your length of ownership of the elear/elex how the clear compares and why someone would want to have the clears instead in your opinion, or even why they would not. The earpads are memory foam and not a struggle to wear or tame. New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be cast, Comparisons to similarly priced or cheaper headphones. Can see why it was brought down to half its original price. And based on memory (and partially borrowing from what I recall others also saying), I do think I remember Clear being just a little more bass emphasized than Elex. FIRST HIGH-END CLOSED-BACK HEADPHONES BY FOCAL To enjoy an incredible listening experience in total privacy, without worrying about a noisy environment disturbing this moment of pleasure: this is the promise made and kept by Elegia. In these high-end circum-aural closed-back headphones, we have combined the best of our skilfully created technologies, developed and … I consider it more U-shaped. So I know Focal Elear isn't exactly new or exciting these days and this is a "late" review. If you were following the early days of the release of Elear/Utopia they were hyped like no other headphone, arguably the greatest hype around headphones ever to this day. The headphones are largely built from met… Focal cans, while flat(ish) compared to the LCD line, are pretty fun to listen to from my experience. However, the Elear has a dynamic quality to it that has been absent in all my previous headphones, with the Sennheiser HD800 coming closest. “Made in France” is printed boldly, in French of course, on both sides along with the name “Elear” and “Aluminium-Magnesium.”. It is more detailed, has a much bigger soundstage, better imaging, and offers a much more natural and cohesive sound. Overall thoughts: I think Elear is almost a great headphone, but it is just a bit wonky. Focal Elear Headphone Review June 14, 2016 February 27, 2018 AudioHead 23 Comments Elear , Focal , Headphone Focal has been in the speaker business for more than 35 years, but it wasn’t until recently that they decided to take the leap into headphone development. In my eyes, the Elear is like if the Elex got into an angry drunken bar fight. Everyone was saying Elear was going to be the "HD650 killer" and then Tyll put it on the wall of fame and hype grew even more. Tyll's review and the beginning of the Elear controversy happened about 3 years ago now, I'm not sure if you were around the headphone community back then. As primarily a headphones guy, I had never even heard of Focal before this summer. The attack on the key hits is immense and startling, and you can feel a piano riff in the chest if it is emphasized in a song’s production enough. There is a hole in the 3-6 kHz range that does some weird stuff. Hi guys, I have an Elear by Focal and I want some advises to choose a good amp to power it. The Elear has a rather “full” sound to it, and this fact has a lot to do with the bass extension and performance. This is not a laid back headphone, like the Omni, and it takes no prisoners in its sound reproduction. I think for purely bass focused music TH-X00 does better if you are ok with its treble energy. 3 years ago His reviews are pretty good (though I always prefer a written review). REVIEW – When I was given the chance to review Focal’s new Elegia headphone, my first thought was to compare it to the slightly more expensive Elear headphone I … Bass quantity is also north of neutral and definitely has a wide hump that bleeds just into the mids to give a warm signature1 (similar to HD650). (Elear has a 6.35mm Jack and an impedance of 80 Ω) For now I have a Zen Dac by Ifi and I'm thinking to upgrade this to truly give to my headphone what it deserve. Questions like: Do the clears handle volume better? There is a hole in the 3-6 kHz range that does some weird stuff. It starts to feel muffled and hazy in this area. The Focal Elear are good open-back critical listening headphones. HE-500 mids are quite nice, more forward, and smoothly transition to treble. Are the clears actually less fatiguing? When I had them side-by-side, you can definitely feel a difference in firmness/“compressability”(?) Yes. Life is busy these days, but happy to help and contribute when possible. It also makes it easier to EQ and compensate. Can be a little harsh for some songs because it is a neutral-bright sound signature. I had no idea this is related to a "hole" in the 3-6 kHz range. Ultimately, these headphones just look so great as well as possess the advantages listed above. I don't. Source gear: RME ADI-2 DAC -> RME's built-in amp/Magni 3/SPL Phonitor XE -> Elear.
